General
Information:
In
the past few years, a strong cooperation activity has grown up
between Chinese and French scientists involved in the LHC
experimental program. Numerous scientists have traveled on both
side and spent weeks of work in each country. Cooperation programs
have been set up on the preparation of physics analysis as well as
on the installation of the required tools from analysis software
to computing grid deployment.
A
need for regular forum between those scientists has appeared as a
way to structure and stabilize these cooperation works. Therefore,
to address this need, it has been found useful to start a series
of annual workshop, alternatively in each country, which will
allow Chinese and French scientists to present and discuss their
view on the common work done and to be done. The main purpose of
the workshop is to foster and develop cooperation between French
and Chinese scientists on different issues related to the LHC
scientific program as well as the deployment of associated
computing grids.
This
first Chinese French workshop will be held at the Institute of
High Energy Physics (IHEP), located 15 kilometers west of Beijing
downtown and about 45 kilometers west of Beijing International
Airport.

Scientific
Program:
The
scientific program will give through plenary talks a complete
overview of the LHC scientific program. It will start by a status
of the LHC accelerator and its four experiments, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb,
and ALICE, as well as the LHC computing grid. An overview of the
scientific panorama in which LHC will start will then be given
with Tevatron results and expectation of ILC in the future. Grid
deployment in China and in France will be presented as well as a
physicist insight on grid use. Then a theoretical review of the
physics at the TeV scale will introduce the physics program of
each of the LHC experiment. Parallel sessions on LHC physics, Tev
scale theoretical developments, and computing grids will then
continue the program. Throughout the workshop, discussions on
Chinese-French cooperation will also be organized. Conclusion
talks will summarize the workshop and will be followed, in the
evening, by a banquet. Tutorial on physics and grid tools will be
given at the end of the workshop.
A
preliminary program will soon be posted on the workshop web site.
Place
and accommodation:
The
workshop will start on December 11th 2006 afternoon and
will end on December 16th. Presentations will be given
at IHEP. Participant will have their accommodation at the IHEP
guest house and adjoin restaurant.
IHEP
address is:
Institute
of High Energy Physics
19B Yuquan Road, Shijingshan District
Beijing 100049, China
Administration
and Visa:
Before
and during the workshop, all administrative issues will be taken
care by IHEP administration assisted by Mrs. F. Lessous from IN2P3
IHEP
will be responsible for issuing visa documents to the participants
who required them. The applicants should provide information
of name, nationality, passport number, the place and name of
Chinese Embassy/Consulate where you apply for the visa. IHEP will
issue the visa document to each applicant. A copy will be sent to
Chinese Embassy or Consulate at the same time to speed up the
procedure of visa application.
In
France, visa and travel operation will be supervised by Mrs. F.
Lessous such that French participants get everything in due time
Useful
information:
Taxi
is the most convenient way from the Beijing Capital Airport to
IHEP. This takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour, and costs about
€15.
Taxi
fare: 2 yuan/km. 10 yuan for the first 3km, and 3 yuan/km from the
15th km. The taxi meter will print out a receipt which has all the
detailed information: price, distance, time, car number, and even
the phone number for customers to complain.
Currency
exchange rate is about 1 euro=10 yuan.
Want
to use your own mobile phone in China?:
Either
your mobile has a Chinese coverage or there are "pay as you
go" services. You can simply buy a new SIM card, from
everywhere including the airport. But first make sure that your
mobile phone allows you to do so. Anyhow sms usually works. Or
more cheaply, you can buy an IC phone card which can be used in
"telephone booth". Mobile phone rate: 0.6 yuan/minute
for China Mobile, and 0.54 yuan/min for China Unicom.
Electricity:
220 volts. The plug is different from the French style, plug
adapter will be provided
Beijing
is a bit "get up early" place. Many parks and museums
open early and close early. For example, the Forbidden City stops
selling ticket at 4pm. Please notice this when arranging
sightseeing.
